2 Simple Shifts to Calm Overwhelm and Restore Your Energy
If overwhelm is draining your energy, it’s not just about what you’re doing…
It’s about what your mind is focusing on.
Here are two powerful shifts that can change how your body responds to stress, almost instantly.
Shift #1: Redirect Your Attention
Your attention fuels your emotional state.
During that overwhelming period in my life, I focused on:
the income I was losing
the exhausting commute
the constant pressure
Even though I was working toward something meaningful…
All I could see was what was hard.
What I didn’t realize at the time?
I was training my brain to stay in stress.
If I could go back, I would shift my focus to:
my son being safe and cared for
completing my training
the excitement of learning something new
Right now, pause and ask yourself:
What’s one thing in your life that feels steady or supportive?
Focus there.
This isn’t about ignoring reality.
It’s about strengthening your emotional foundation so stress doesn’t take over.
Shift #2: Protect Your Mental Energy
When your brain focuses on problems, your body hears:
“We’re not safe.”
That triggers cortisol, and keeps you stuck in survival mode.
One simple reframe I now use is what I call:
The “Champagne Problem” Mindset
Back then, I would say:
“This drive is exhausting. There’s so much traffic.”
Now I would say:
“I have a car. My son is safe. I get to pursue something meaningful.”
Same situation.
Different internal experience.
That shift moves your body from:
Stress → to Safety
Tension → to Regulation
And that’s where your energy starts to come back.
👍 In the final post (The Missing Piece: Why Your Motivation Isn’t Coming Back (And How to Rebuild It), I’ll share the most important shift. How to regain control over your emotions without suppressing them.
